Best Truffle Dogs
As you can easily guess, truffle dogs must have a highly developed sense of smell focused only on the smell of truffles (training really serves to teach not to have distractions towards other smells).

- The Lagotto Romagnolo is certainly one of the best truffle dogs, so much so that it is called the "king of truffles".
The only breed recognized by the FCI for truffle hunting. Medium to small sized dog, well proportioned, with powerful powerful muscles, it has a thick curly coat of woolly texture which allows it to tolerate harsh climates well.
His behavior is generally sober, intelligent, affectionate and very attached to the owner. He is easily trainable.
He is easily intimidated and therefore not a dog for nervous owners.
- There are several Bracco dog breeds and they have origins scattered all over the world.
They are all hunting dogs, agile and smart, they differ from each other not only for their physical appearance, but also for some behavioral characteristics. The Hungarian Bracco and the German Bracco are excellent truffle dogs.
The Hungarian Pointer: it can be short-haired or wire-haired, this breed is considered one of the most balanced among pointing dogs. It is an animal with great intelligence and a strong predisposition to work. It has a docile and sweet character, very delicate and sensitive. The musculature is very developed and moreover it practically never barks.
The German Bracco: it is a vital and energetic dog, with a sweet, affectionate, faithful and balanced character. This dog is never nervous or aggressive. It has a relevant and homogeneous musculature.
- English Pointer: it is considered one of the best truffle dogs around. The Pointer is a hunting dog and gets its name from the
characteristic pose assumed when it intercepts the smell of a prey.
The nature of these dogs leads them to be very inclined to work with inexhaustible energy. Obedience training is recommended as they can be quite determined and stubborn.
- The Jack Russell Terrier is an energetic dog and needs a lot of movement, is vocal and has a great hunting instinct. His body frame is muscular. He is a dog with a happy character, with an energetic spirit and a strong desire to work. This breed loves company and loves to be assigned a task. Digging is normal for this breed. His instinct for hunting obliges him to be trained in order to be used for the search for truffles.
- The Italian Spinone is a breed of dog with a very sociable, docile and patient character. This dog is a hunter on all types of terrain, resistant to fatigue with marked aptitudes for a broad and fast trot and is naturally an excellent retriever.
It has strong bones and well-developed muscles. It is a large breed with a bristling, harsh coat.
- The Cocker is a sporty, cheerful and robust dog. It has a medium / small tonnage with remarkable athletic skills. Loaded with vitality and temperament, it is suitable for carrying out activities where resistance and passion are required. He is a balanced dog, with an athletic and strong but at the same time elegant footprint. It has a great charge of vitality and energy and of course an excellent nose.
